ASEAN Supports Flood Relief Efforts in Malaysia

PULAU MERANTI, 8 January 2014 - The ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management (AHA Centre) today symbolically handed-over disaster emergency relief items to Majlis Keselamatan Negara (MKN) Malaysia as part of ASEAN’s solidarity. The symbolic hand-over of ASEAN support was conducted at National Disaster Command Centre (NDCC), Pulau Meranti and was attended by Mr Ogu Salim bin Omar, Deputy Secretary of MKN; Mr Said Faisal, Executive Director of AHA Centre; and Ms Adelina Kamal of the ASEAN Secretariat.

“We would like to express our deepest sympathy and condolence for the loss of lives and properties in the affected areas in Malaysia. We are confident that the Malaysian Government, together with people of Malaysia, will be able to manage one of the biggest floods that have happened in the country and re-build the lives of the affected communities,” said Mr. Faisal.

In close coordination with MKN, AHA Centre has deployed its field team and mobilised relief items from its Disaster Emergency Logistic System for ASEAN (DELSA) located in Subang, Malaysia. The relief items being mobilised to support the Government’s relief efforts consist of 538 family tents, 538 ASEAN family kits, 498 shelter toolkits, 1,000 rolls of tarpaulins, 2 Mobile Storage Units (MSUs) and 1,500 kitchen sets. The relief items are made available through the support of Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF).

Other than providing the relief items, the AHA Centre’s field team has been in close coordination with MKN to provide any necessary assistance, while the Emergency Operation Centre of AHA Centre in Jakarta is closely monitoring the situation and sharing the updates with other ASEAN Member States. “AHA Centre would like to thank the MKN for facilitating and supporting the mobilisation of ASEAN’s assistance,” Mr. Faisal added. AHA Centre, which is based in Jakarta, was established on 17 November 2011 following the signing of the Agreement on the Establishment of AHA Centre at the 19th ASEAN Summit in Bali, Indonesia. AHA Centre is the operational coordination engine under the ASEAN Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response, and its purpose is to facilitate cooperation and coordination among ASEAN Member States, and with relevant United Nations and international organisations, in promoting regional collaboration.
